Watch the video from Steve McVey, “Christian Lie #22: “When we sin we are out of fellowship with God” and my comments follow…
Praise God that He is more powerful than us!
That there’s nothing WE can do to separate ourselves from Him…
The idea that when we sin, we are out of fellowship with God, is a LIE because once you are IN Christ, nothing can take you out….
The Prodigal Son couldn’t do it…
Steve uses the parable of the prodigal son from Luke 15 as an example. The young son who took his inheritance early, went away to a far country… spent it all on wild living… then eventually was starving, craving the corncobs that the pigs he was feeding were eating. Then he realized how crazy it was to be starving when even his father’s servants were well fed. He decided he’d go back home and beg for his father’s forgiveness, he even had a great apology all worked up to try to “Get back right” with his father…
“… I’ll say to him, Father, I’ve sinned against God, I’ve sinned before you; I don’t deserve to be called your son. Take me on as a hired hand.’ He got right up and went home to his father.
20-21“When he was still a long way off, his father saw him. His heart pounding, he ran out, embraced him, and kissed him. The son started his speech: ‘Father, I’ve sinned against God, I’ve sinned before you; I don’t deserve to be called your son ever again.’
22-24“But the father wasn’t listening. He was calling to the servants, ‘Quick. Bring a clean set of clothes and dress him. Put the family ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Then get a grain-fed heifer and roast it. We’re going to feast! We’re going to have a wonderful time! My son is here—given up for dead and now alive! Given up for lost and now found!’ And they began to have a wonderful time.” (The Message)
Did the son’s “sins” separate him from his father’s love?
Did he get “out of fellowship” with his father because of his actions?
NO!
You’re the only one who thinks you’re separated…
Only his son perceived himself as being separated from his father! His father wouldn’t even listen to his apology because he was so glad his son had come back home. His father’s love was too great to be even damaged by his son’s actions.
It’s the same way with you and me and our heavenly father. NOTHING we could do will separate us from His love… or take us out of fellowship with Him. It’s just that when we sin, we FEEL like we’ve been separated, but we really haven’t. Paul said it like this in Romans 8:38-39 (NASB):
38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers,
39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
So the idea that when you sin you are somehow “out of fellowship with God” and need to do something to get back into his favor is a complete and total LIE! Don’t let it fool you, there’s nothing you can do to separate yourself from your father’s love!
