Watch the video below by Steve McVey, Christian Religion Lie #69: “We Should Work For God” and my comments (of course!) follow…
If you get in touch with your emotions when you hear this lie, you’ll be able to tell that it makes you feel like a slave…
It makes you feel like you’re OBLIGATED to do something for God. Obligated to “work for Him”…
But is this really what scripture teaches?
The Bible says the work is the work of the Lord
The work is the work of the lord. God is REALLY the one at work doing everything. But we participate in in with God… as Paul says, we are “CO-laborers”.
Ephesians 2:10 says:
“For we are God’s [own] handiwork (His workmanship), recreated in Christ Jesus, [born anew] that we may do those good works which God predestined (planned beforehand) for us [taking paths which He prepared ahead of time], that we should walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us to live].”
Our participation in work with God is a gift to us from Him.
We aren’t “required” to do anything for Him, we aren’t “supposed” to “do something for God”.
There is no requirement like that from God to His children. He loves you unconditionally no matter what you do… or DON’T do. This is the meaning of “unconditional” — God’s attitude doesn’t depend on anything you do.
Why is this lie hurtful?
This is a condemning lie that makes you feel like you’re never doing enough.
It will keep you on the religious treadmill of ativity after activity after activity… until you burn out. And the worse part is you’ll be so focused on “the work you’re doing for God” that you’ll totally forget to have a relationship with Him and grow in love and intimacy in that relationship.
So is it ok to do anything for God?
Of course!
But it shouldn’t feel like a responsibility. It shouldn’t feel burdonsome. All your work “for God” should come from a place of feeling like there’s so much love and amazingness in your relationship with God FIRST — that you can’t possibly keep it in and want to do “work” for God.
Even though, you’re just really stepping into the work He has already done and participating in the process with Him…
So don’t believe this lie that you are supposed to work for God anymore. It’s not true and will only leave you feeling like you’re never doing enough anyways.
With Love
Caleb
