Check the vid below from my hombre in arms, Steve McVey, called Christian Lie #6: “You Need to love God More” and my comments follow…
Again, this lie SOUNDS great… sounds good… and sounds Godly… but it just aint truth. As Steve says, the greatest need isn’t to love God more… but to understand how much God loves us.
Most everything in the Christian life is like this, a reaction to our Father– not the other way around:
- We love Him because He first loved us
- We want to serve Him because He first served us
- We want to repent of our sins because we know we’re already forgiven…
It’s the understanding of how MUCH He loves us that inspires the same behavior back.
Often, our relationship with Father is compared to a marriage–and this is a great example to think about:
If you’re a married man, or have a serious girlfriend, then you’ve probably experienced this “phenomena” (if you’re a grace lovin gal, see if you recognize this pattern in yourself)…
Whenever you’ve shown your girl amazing LOVE–really opened your heart, allowed her to be really feminine, and feel really LOVED–all kinds of things start happening…
Maybe she seems EAGER to cook you dinner (and make your favorite dish)…
… she wants to give you a back rub or a massage…
… she goes and cleans your bathroom or bedroom just to surprise you (I have the dirtiest bathroom in the world, so to me this is TRUE love
)…
Why?
Is it because you told her “your greatest need is to love me more and do these things for me!”
Or is it because you first loved her, totally and unconditionally (if only for a brief period of time — a limiting-condition of our human nature) and she simply WANTED to love you back… and display it in her own little way…
Note: If you haven’t experienced this, try it and pay attention. Set aside an hour today to focus totally on your woman, praise her, tell her why you’re in love with her, show her physically, whatever… and watch how she acts the rest of the night, and the next morning/day… odds are you’ll see her looking for ways to show you love.
So like Steve says, this teaching of needing to love God more is from the law (Matthew 22:36)… and our greatest need is to instead understand how much God first loves us because it’s the only way we can love him more.
