Why you do NOT need more faith

by calebo on July 23, 2008

Watch the video below by Steve McVey, Christian Religion Lie #62 “We Need More Faith”and my comments follow…

Do we really need faith?

Did you just get a little bit of faith… and you have to keep asking for more?

NO!

By receiving Christ, you received FAITH!

Paul calls Christ faith outright. He says this about Him in Galatians 3:23 (Notice how Paul refers to faith and to Christ as the same thing (emphasis mine)):

Before this faith came, we were held prisoners by the law, locked up until faith should be revealed. 24 So the law was put in charge to lead us to Christ that we might be justified by faith. 25 Now that faith has come, we are no longer under the supervision of the law.”

Why is this lie dangerous?

This Lie will keep you evaluating yourself, seeing if you have “enough faith” and you’ll always be focused on yourself and getting more faith.

You’ll be focused on your “flesh” on how you can “be better for God” instead of focusing on what God has ALREADY done in your life. And what God is doing… and the relationship that He wants to make more intimate with you.

So do you need to pray for more faith?

No!

Simply rest in the fact, that you have all the faith you need because you have Christ within you now that you’re a Christian.

After all, Christ Himself said great things could be accomplished with faith only the size of a mustard seed right?

So don’t focus anymore on trying to get more faith. Simply rest in the fact that you are now IN the one who is faithful — Christ.

With Love :)

I would love to hear your flesh this out more. I’d love to hear your perspective on the words of Christ when he says things like “ye of little faith” or “faith of a mustard seed”. I can see both a confirmation of what you say and also a conflict.

You say Christ Jesus is our faith, thus there can be no quantification of it, because Christ is Christ. Yet Jesus it seems quantifies it. If Christ is our faith, how can it be the size of a mustard seed.

At the same time it confirms what you say, because it would seem that Christ is saying ANY measure of faith is enough to perform amazing wonders. So, from your perspective, was Christ telling Peter when he sinking that he simply forgot (for lack of a better word) Christ and the power he has in us and, in a sence, had misplaced his faith in doing so? Not that Peter didn’t have enough faith?

Id love to hear what your perspective is on this

Hey Martin,

This is pretty on track…

“was Christ telling Peter when he sinking that he simply forgot (for lack of a better word) Christ and the power he has in us”

… because faith itself is a gift from God. (Heb 12:2, Rom 12:3) So it’s not about something you need to get more of to perform anything ,etc.

What I mean is — it’s not about how much YOU have or can generate, it’s about WHO you have faith in — what is your faith — which is Jesus. And Jesus is all you’ll need — that’s why you need little more than the faith of a mustard seed because it’s what your faith is IN — and that’s Christ.

Now, something else you must always keep in mind about Christ’s actual words is — He wasn’t done yet! He had not yet been crucified and raised from the dead — so the people He was talking to were in a different position in relation to righteousness justified by faith in a risen savior.

So a lot of what Jesus said, isn’t necessarily applicable to you and I because we are in a different “place” than people still walking in Jesus’ time with Him… before He had “put away the sins of the world”… before He had fulfilled all the prophecies He came to fulfill… before He had completely fulfilled His purposes. As it says in 2 Tim 2:15, we need to “rightly divide the word” to see what applies and what doesn’t…

Does that make sense?

That was well explained. Thank you.

“That’s why you need little more than the faith of a mustard seed because it’s what your faith is IN”

Or in my own words. Since Jesus is God and therefore infinity powerful, the amount of faith we have in Jesus, whist it may be quantifiable, is irrelevant, since any amount of faith in Him still equates to something infinite.

Thanks and may God bless your ministry immensely.
