Watch the vid below by Steve McVey, Christian Religion Lie #63 “The Holy Spirit Convicts Us Of Our Sin“ and my comments of course follow…
This is a VERY common lie that you hear all the time. But it’s simply not true.
What does the Bible say about your sins after you’ve become a believer?
- Hebrews 9:28 says Jesus came to put away sins by the sacrifice of Himself.
- Psalms 103:12 says because of your forgiveness your sins have been separated as far from you as the east is from the west
- Jesus’ last words were “it is finished” in John 19:30. What was? The defeating of sin because…
- 1 John 3:5 says that Jesus came to take away sin…
- So now the question to ask is…
Did Jesus succeed at His purpose?
Of course! Jesus is God and God ALWAYS succeeds at His purpose. So Jesus took away your sins and dealt with Sin FOREVER at the cross.
So if these sins have been dealt with then the Holy Spirit will not convict you of them right?
After all, if the Holy Spirit is indeed convicting you of sins (if that’s His purpose as most Christian teaching would have you believe) then your sins are NOT truly as far apart from you as the east is from the west.
Then the Psalmist is a liar. And Jesus is a liar for saying “it is finished”. This can’t be true right?
So what does the Holy Spirit convict believers of?
Righteousness.
The Holy Spirit reminds you that you are righteous in Christ. That you’re not acting like who you REALLY are because you’re a part of God now. Then you realize who you are, righteous, a partaker of the divine nature (2 Peter 1:4), and then you realize you’re not acting like who you are–at your spirit level and turn away from your sins.
Don’t believe the lie!
So the Holy Spirit doesn’t convict believers of their sin, He won’t convict you of yours, He only convicts you (or convinces you) of who you REALLY are… deep down… and shows you that you’re acting like someone else when you sin. So don’t believe this lie anymore that the Holy Spirit convicts you of sin.

Great post, Caleb! I was going to write something brilliant in response to it, but I’m afraid my brain is fried from lack of sleep (likely excuse, huh?)
Anyway, it was great having you at my workshop on Sunday, and look forward to sharing the results with everyone at the next class.

Hey you!
Lack of sleep again eh? JEEZ — what are you doing every night besides sleeping!
Glad you liked the post. The workshop was fun yes, and although I’m going to the beach for the weekend, I SHOULD be able to make the workshop again this Sunday.
If I don’t though — know that it makes me sad! haha
