Watch the video below by Steve McVey, Christian Religion Lie #81 “Serving Christ Will Make You Closer To Him” and my comments follow…
This sounds good, that the more we “Serve” Christ the closer we’ll grow to Him… but it’s actually the OPPOSITE of what usually happens.
Service usually gets in the way!
You see, us Christians tend to get so focused on “serving Christ” that it’s no longer about Him, it’s about us, about how much we’re doing how much we’re feeding our egos–we’re distracted from the very one who it’s all supposed to be about.
What does the Bible say?
Luke 10:40 and the story of Mary and Martha (NIV, emphasis mine):
“But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”"
Who was Martha distracted from?
From Christ! Jesus told her…
“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42. but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
What’s the truth?
Serving Christ won’t get you closer to Him. You can’t be closer to someone than being a part of Him. Which you already are. You can’t get any closer.
Instead focus on your relationship with Christ (and the service will be an overflow of that–and in the right spirit)…
Focus on Christ, focus on the union you already have in Him, focus on your relationship with Him, talk to Him, discover how much He already loves you and you’ll “Feel” closer to Him (because you’re already close). Then you’ll serve in the appropriate amount and won’t get distracted from the person who is your very life.
With Love
Caleb

You are going to use one verse to illustrate how serving the Lord will only get in the way of your relationship with Him?
What about:
Romans 12:11
Joshua 24:15
Ephesians 6:7
Colossians 3:24
