So glad you wrote the rebuttal! I have been traumatised all my life by religion and know how it binds and imprisons. Just as you start to experience real freedom along comes some theologian with all their isms and ologies to "teach" you that you're in some sort of spiritual peril and danger.

May God's blessings abound to you!

your book Grace Rules totally changed my life. I was raised in a church where leagalism was taught. I lnew that there was no way that I could impress God or even get him to love me. there was always the possibility of not being perfect enough, haveing enough faith, or trust enough that i could not be sure of my salvation. no matter how many songs we sang (for instance "what a friend we have in Jesus") could i really believe that he was my friend or that he loved me. I knew that I could never be "perfect" so why bother trying? One morning i was flipping through the chanels on t.v. and Joyce Meyers happend to be on. it was the one about leagleism in the church. Well that got me started thinking and not long after that my mom gave me your "grace rules" book. i have not been the same since. i am now free and loving God and living a joy filled life without a ton of bricks on me. i have felt so realieved and feel like i can finally breathe! Now i want to live for God instead of have to! i have grown so much and have actually touched some lives around me for the first time. thankyou so much for sharing your words of wisdom (which i know came from God). i will be praying for you and all those lives you have touched and those who need touching (see above). kim

ya, you're a WRITER (liberal/humanist) and certainly no theologian.

Don't go where you have no business going. Sick with your fiction. That is your world so just stay there.

Bet you have tattoos and piercings and your wife or partner wears cropped off hair and makeup?

Ew, how "legalistic"

I haven't found a Christian book on the market that I couldn't find fault with in one way or another. I can't believe that some stuffed shirt that's so full of knowledge couldn't write something better, it's so easy to pick things apart, it's quite another thing to be inspired to write something better. I completely understand McVey's point and with the common sense the Lord has given me this book has been a wonderful source to be renewed and regenerated. I'm certain that really upsets the original reviewer. It's too bad we can't always see the good things that are wrapped up in the treasures God gives us. I've truly been blessed by this book, my life in Christ is more committed
and full because of it. Isn't that wonderful?

Respectfully,

Thanks for the rebuttal. I thought it was great! I believe it all boils down to the comparison between the Old and the New Covenants. The Law of Moses which includes the whole law, including the 10 Commandments is contrasted with the Spirit of Christ in 2 Corinthians. The two cannot be combined. God will not share his glory with anyone and Jesus is the glory of God..

2 Corinthians 6-11
6Who also made us adequate as servants of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.7But if the MINISTRY OF DEATH IN LETTERS ENGRAVED IN STONE ( I know of only one thing that was engraved in stone, the 10 Commandments), came with glory, so that the sons of Israel could not look intently at the face of Moses because of the glory of his face, fading as it was, 8 how will the ministry of the Spirit fail to be even more with glory? 9 For if THE MINISTRY OF CONDEMNATION has glory, much more does the ministry of righteousness abound in glory. 10 For indeed what had glory, in this case has no glory because of the glory that surpasses it. 11 FOR IF THAT WHICH FADES AWAY was with glory, much more that which remains is in glory. 12 Therefore having such a hope, we use great boldness in our speech,13 and are not like Moses, who used to put a veil over his face so that the sons of Israel would not look intently at the end of what was fading away.14 But their minds were hardened; for until this very day at the reading of the old covenant the same veil remains unlifted, but it is removed in Christ. 15 But to this day whenever Moses (The Law) is read, a veil lies over their heart; 16but whenever a person turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

The translation in verse. 11 is not completely accurate. It leads one to think that the Old Covenant is “fading away” but if something is fading away it is not completely gone.
Examine these alternate translations:

11) for if that which is being made useless (Youngs Literal Translation)
11) For if that annulled (Darby Translation)
11) and if that that is voided (Wycliff New Testament)
11) For if what was being brought to an end came (English Standard Translation)
11) If that law which disappeared came with glory (New Century version)

The law isn't fading away, it's gone, we are now under the New Covenant
the Spirit of Christ. We don't need rules any more HE, love is the fulfillment of the law.

Notice that the Moral Law is called the ministry that brings death and condemnation. It is also referred in Galatians as the yoke of bondage. The age of the Law, the Ten Commandments, the school master, the unreasonable husband, the thing which, in Romans 7, Paul describes as making sin exceedingly sinful. The power, the booster rocket for sin is the Law (1 Corinthians 15:56). So why do we continue to cling to that which has served its purpose in pointing us to Christ and has been voided by God in the life of the believer?

God has provided everything that we will ever need in Christ. HE has become unto us our wisdom and our righteousness and our sanctification. IN HIM are hidden all of the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. He is everything we need for life and godliness. It’s all because we are IN CHRIST and CHRIST is in us. The creator of the world, the one who had to humble himself to enter the created order lives in us and HE, the living water flows out of our inner most being to produce the fruit of His Spirit. What else do we need.... a set of rules?... when we have life himself living in and through us. All praise, honor and glory belong to HIM alone. Thank you father for the greatest gift of all, Jesus, our life, our hope our peace, our security, our everything!!!!

Paul said to the church in Galatia, “that if I rebuild what I once destroyed I make myself a law breaker. For through the law I died to the law that I might live unto GOD.” There is only one way to live unto God, that is to die to the law, you own human efforts and attempts to please God and let Christ live his life through you.

The church has lost its moorings, it has left its first love. Jesus is our first love. He is all we need.

I am so legalistically entrenched that I can't seem to get the Grace Walk into myself. I can't seem to get myself out of the way.
I know for sure God does not want His children fighting among themselves - over doctrine, over grace, over lists of sins, etc.
Unfortunately, no denomination seems to trust the Holy Spirit to teach and remind his children what is important for them to know. I empathize with author Steve who could only have come to this surrender by earnestly having tried to walk by Biblical laws as he perceived them. I empathize with the critic who is so fearful the Grace Walk will excuse believers from Biblical quest and creating their own God other than the One revealed in the Word. I empathize with the defender who has tried to present a balance.
I'm a frustrated Christian of fifty some years. Only recently have I heard of the GraceWalk - freedom from my inadequacy to please my Lord.
The fact is: truth will always have a close counterfeit. Some people will always hear truth and filter it though their own understanding. So, some may choose to take Steve's teaching as license to use their own fleshly standards by which to live - whether they be the fleshly standards of the world or the fleshly standards of religiosity. That certainly is nothing new. Others may choose to jump on board only to unwittingly create a new "religion" to serve. Disciples in Christ's day did the same - some to continue to grow and others to fall away.
Despite all of our best efforts to criticize or defend Steve, it will be the Holy Spirit who will enlighten - not our logical treatises.
When I read Grace Walk it never occurred to me that grace was to replace Scripture. No one can expect to walk in the grace of Jesus without knowing first who He is, what He did, how He loved, and most especially how we are inadequate to do it ourselves. My understanding is that biblical knowledge must precede, but not limit, a walk with Christ. Jesus himself said, "I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. However, when He, the spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth" (John 16:12-13).
Perhaps the critic is unable to "bear them now." Pray for him, and me, and all who have accepted religion as a counterfeit for walking in Christ. I have not been able to embrace the Grace Walk except intellectually. But, I am expecting the Holy Spirit to get me there – in His time.
Just thoughts,
