How to find God’s will in your life

Watch the short clip below by Steve McVey, “Christian Lie #25: “You need to find God’s perfect will for your life”" and my comments follow…

Steve nailed this one right on the head — AGAIN :)

As he aptly noted, many times you can steer yourself clear of these lies just by recognizing how they begin… “you need” or “you should” or “you ought to” … all imply things that you should be DOING in order to please God/draw closer to Him–which is the essence of legalism. Ya dig?

Onward!

“You need to find God’s perfect will for your life” I can’t think of another statement that caused me so much confusion about the time I was turning 18 years old or so. I was just moving out and trying to figure out what the heck to do with my life… And I really did NOT want to make a wrong decision and “screw up God’s will” for my life…

See, I figured that if I didn’t make the right choice I could somehow mess up the perfect plans God had laid out for me. Thank the Lord that He is WAY BIGGER than me or anything I could mess up!

You’ve been looking in the WRONG place…

The truth is: there is NO perfect will for your life… at least not where you’ve been looking for it. The perfect will for your life rests in one person — Jesus Christ. And if you have Him, then simply by surrendering to His leading each and every day God’s plan will be made known to you.

Paul says it like this in Romans 12:1-2 (The Message, emphasis mine):

1-2 So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you. “

You see Paul explains the will of God for your life in a couple unique ways…

First you’re surrendering to Christ’s leading in your life each day, in everything you do. You simply stop looking for “the perfect will of God” and focus instead on God. “you’ll be changed from the inside out” Paul writes…

Then look for and recognize God’s leading in your life and respond to it, go where He leads you…

A note about this: some people think one life is more spiritual than the other. That’s a lie too! The will of God for one Christian may be to become a televangelist and lead 1,000’s of people to Christ over the TV… and another, equally important will of God may be for the janitor who mops the floors at a local high school to do his best job as a janitor, and radiate the love of Christ to everyone he comes into contact with during the day.

Remember two things…

1.) Don’t get anxiety about finding “The perfect will” of God in your life… or “screwing up his plans for your life” because you’re NOT that powerful–NOT that big, that you could mess up God’s will for your life. And…

2.) God’s will for your life IS the person of Jesus Christ. Once you’ve accepted Him into your life, your only job is to surrender to His leading each and every day in your life… and His will will be made known through that leading.

So remember, when you hear “you need to find God’s perfect will for your life” — it’s a LIE — Jesus IS the perfect will of God for you life and always will be.
