Why you can NOT backslide from God

by calebo on August 29, 2008

Watch the video below by Steve Mcvey, Christian Religion Lie #82 “You Can Backslide From Godand my illustrious comments follow (as always!)…

OhmyGod! I used to hear this stuff all the time…

  • “You’re a backslidin’ Christian…”
  • “You needta get back “right” with God…”
  • “Oh, I think he’s a Christian, but he’s a backslider… haven’t seen him in Church in a while…”

And then you hear that you need to do something to get yourself back “right” with God. But the truth is, it’s a lie. Here’s why:

Watch the video below by Steve McVey, Christian Religion Lie #81 “Serving Christ Will Make You Closer To Himand my comments follow…

This sounds good, that the more we “Serve” Christ the closer we’ll grow to Him… but it’s actually the OPPOSITE of what usually happens.

Service usually gets in the way!

You see, us Christians tend to get so focused on “serving Christ” that it’s no longer about Him, it’s about us, about how much we’re doing how much we’re feeding our egos–we’re distracted from the very one who it’s all supposed to be about.

What does the Bible say?

Watch the video below by Steve McVey, Christian Religion Lie #80 “You need to pray to love Christ moreand my comments follow…

I‘m sure we’ve all prayed a prayer like this (I know I have!):

“God, help me to love you more”

With sincere hearts and a real desire to WANT to love Christ more. It’s because we have “the mind of Christ” that we sincerely want to Love God more.

And we see other Christians and think “they obviously love God more than I do”–which leads us to feeling inadequate and wanting more.

So the idea of praying to love Christ more seems like a good one…

But what does the Bible say?

How to be ok when things go wrong

by calebo on August 26, 2008

Today, I was planning on writing another post on the next in the series of Christian lies.

That was the plan. But you know how the saying goes…

If you want to make God laugh, tell Him your plans!

Now, this isn’t some horrible thing that happened to me. But it seems there was a technical snafu that’s going to keep me from doing that today.

At this moment, when things go wrong, you have two basic choices:

  1. Grumble that things went wrong, didn’t go “according to plan” and choose to suffer…
  2. Accept that something happened. It didn’t go according to YOUR plan… but… it must be according to God’s plan and “go with the flow” so to speak.

You see, God has a plan for everything. And no matter how much we think “things are screwed up” or “I screwed something up”… it is all working out exactly as God has planned…

Why You Do Not Need To Do Better

by calebo on August 25, 2008

Watch the video below by Steve McVey, Christian Religion Lie #77 “You Should Do Better” and my comments follow…

You hear this all the time. So much so that it almost sounds normal.

In fact, you probably hear a voice inside your head saying this to yourself…

“You need to do better” at…

  • reading your Bible
  • praying every day
  • having a “quiet time”
  • being more nice to people…
  • being a good person…
  • and tons more!

The truth is: you can’t do better.

YOU were not designed to do better. You were designed to live out of the source, the empowerment of everything, the LIFE of Christ…

Why You Don’t Need An Accountability Partner

by calebo on August 21, 2008

Watch the video by Steve McVey called Christian Religion Lie #76 “You Need An Accountability Partnerand my comments follow…

Ahh, this one is funny. Cause I heard it all the time growing. It’s pitched as a way to “always make sure you’re doing the “right thing”".

Basically the idea is that you need someone to meet with once a week or so to tell all your darkest secrets to. The idea is if you have someone like this in your life, who you know you have to tell the truth to then you’ll be so embarrassed when confessing your sins to him each week–that it will keep you from sinning.

Basically a way to…

Shame you into being good!

It’s very legalistic thinking. Here’s why:

Watch the video by Steve McVey, Christian Religion Lie #75 “You Need Your Church (Or Pastor) To Be Your Covering and my comments follow…

I never really heard this one told to me when I was growing up. But it seems to be prevelant. Basically it goes like this:

“If you’re not following the “party line” (following the church, or pastor) then you’re taken out of the “covering” or protection of the church. Basically you don’t get any protection from the world or devil because you’re not in the church”.

What a lie this is!

The Bible simply doesn’t teach it…

Why your heart is not desperately wicked

by calebo on August 19, 2008

Watch the video below by Steve Mcvey, Christian Religion Lie #74 “Your Heart Is Desperately Wicked and my comments follow…

This is an old testament saying–an old testament quote–an old covenant idea (Jeremiah 17:9).

But we are not under the old covenant… the old law… the old testament “way of doing things”. Nope. Christ was the fulfillment of all that and with His death, burial, and resurrection completed all that and finished it once and for all.

And now, because of God’s new covenant with us — through Christ you have a new heart…

Why you are perfect no matter how you act

by calebo on August 18, 2008

Watch the video below by Steve McVey, Christian Religion Lie #73 “Nobody Is Perfect” and my comments follow…

Sounds strange that this would be a lie right?

The reason why this sounds strange is we look at the behavior of people to determine their perfection–BUT God looks at the heart. God looks at the SPIRIT of a person.

Here’s how it works…
